Rain Barrel

Franklin Elementary and Pacific Beach Middle School students will be watching for every drop of rain, thanks to a rain-collection system installed with a grant from the US-Israel Center on Innovation and Economic Sustainability at the UC San Diego Rady School of Management.

The system was developed in Israel by former teacher Amir Yechieli, who installed Israel's first water catchment systems at elementary schools 16 years ago. Today, Yechieli's business, Rain Harvest, serves over 140 schools in Israel. Yechieli was on hand to supervise the installations.

Franklin and PB Middle students helped install the system and will be recording the amounts collected with help from UC San Diego students.

The water will be used to nourish the school gardens.
