All About Volunteering

Volunteer Program

The Volunteer Program provides support and guidance to schools to help them facilitate family and community engagement that benefits our students and the learning community as a whole.

Currently, more than 29,000 volunteers work in a variety of capacities in the San Diego Unified School District.

These volunteers - family members, business/community partners, community members, the military, K-12 and college students, senior citizens, and others - represent the economic, social, language, racial, religious and educational backgrounds within the San Diego community.

Volunteers provide important support at all schools. In middle school common volunteer activities include supporting clubs and afterschool athletics, sitting on exhibition panels, establish business/community partnerships, and assisting in the main office, in the library/media centers and with fundraising efforts for school foundations, and scholarships.

Volunteering at the school also serves as a model for your family to see that giving back and showing appreciation is important. Caring is an IB learner profile trait and volunteering is caring in action.

Getting Started

All schools are asked to designate a school site volunteer coordinator. All volunteer work must be done under the direction of a teacher, site volunteer coordinator, principal or vice principal.

Volunteers must comply with the district's volunteer screening requirements and follow rules and expectations set-forth by the Volunteer Code of Conduct at all times.

Family and community members interested in volunteering should:

  1. Contact the school to ask to speak with the volunteer coordinator or designee.
  2. Comply with appropriate volunteer screening requirements. New appication must be turned in each year to each school. (English) (Spanish)
  3. Complete and return a school volunteer application. (English) (Spanish)
  4. Read and agree to the Volunteer Code of Conduct: (English) (Spanish)
  5. Provide results of current Tuberculin skin test and current government issued ID (we will make a copy).
  6. If driving on a field-trip the current documents must be on file before transporting any children:
    1. Current Driver's License
    2. Current insurance card for the car/driver being used to transport children
    3. Cell phone number of driver
    4. Before leaving with students make sure you, as a driver has a complete list of students you are transporting, address destination, schedule, and cell phone of trip organizer or school emergency contact

To ensure an organized volunteer system and, most importantly, the safety of our students and adults on campus, we expect all volunteers to follow these site procedures:

  1. Upon arrival, ALL volunteers MUST sign in at the front office every time you come onto or back to campus.
  2. After signing in please pick-up and wear your badget. Badget must be visible at all times.
  3. Upon departure, sign out at the front office.
  4. If you are returning on the same day, (ie going to lunch and coming back) you must sign in and out each time you leave and return.

NOTE: Because of the safety of our students is of utmost importance, we must know who is on campus at all times, and where they will be volunteering.

Our volunteer procedures will be strictly enforced. Noncompliance with our volunteer procedures will be referred to administration and volunteer status.

Pacific Beach Middle appreciates you giving your time and we look forward to a productive, safe, and rewarding year of volunteerism.

SDUSD Administrative Procedure 4595 outlines procedures for school volunteer programs. In order to provide students with a safe environment and allow for a variety of opportunities for volunteering, volunteer participation is classified into four categories. Depending on the category and planned activities of the volunteer, additional screening processes may be required prior to volunteering.

Volunteer Screening Requirements: English Spanish. After the school learns about your skills, they will decide where you will best be utilized.
