Pacific Beach Middle International Baccalaureate student, Nicolas Campagna and his family, hosted a Beach Clean Up event for the Mission Bay learning community. Students from all Pacific Beach schools collected 72lbs of debris from our local Law Street beach. The biggest culprit of litter on the beach was discarded plastic, with over 600 pieces collected and the runner-up was 345 cigarette filters, most of which arrive on our shores from storm drains. The event included a raffle with support from businesses including Sector 9 Skateboards, San Diego Surf School, Taco Surf, Mr. Frosties, Rocket Fizz, and Filippi's Pizza. Proceeds from the raffle were donated to the RERIP Organization, an official San Diego Unified School District Partner in Education. Rerip.com works to keep surf, skate, and snowboards, and the toxic chemicals used in their manufacturing process, out of the local landfills which ultimately contribute to pollution of our ocean from watershed run-off. Thank you to all of the Pacific Beach students supported our community service event and made a difference to residents and marine animals.
